I just finished listening to this book via Audibles today. I'm going to listen to it again but felt that it was probably the most impactful book I have read to help with marriage, ranking right up there with Anatomy of Peace, Leadership and Self Deception, and Outward Mindset. Definitely MORE impactful than anything by Harley, or Smalley or anyone else to date. And I've read a lot of relationship books in my lifetime. The authors are part of an organization called VitalSmarts. Another powerful book I read by them, plus an additional author - last name Maxfield.

So what will follow will be my notes as I do the second listen. But first some highlights:

Emotionally charged communication typically will not get us the results or response we're hoping for.

"Silence or Violence" is a defensive communication style that signals a lack of safety. The book goes into detail about processes to increase safety before proceeding, but also how to protect oneself against violence (not physical, but more of the power-over, "my-way-or-the-highway" kind of communication).

Has anyone else read the book yet or recently? What are your thoughts?

I'm thinking about getting the two-pack with this and crucial accountability! It seems like the two books are "better together" and I think I'd get a lot out of them.

I have a few weeks between when my summer classes end and my actual program begins, I think it might be a good time to squeeze them in.

When we open to this moment and don't judge it or try to change it, even when we're suffering and wish it were otherwise, we tap into the spaciousness of mind that allows us to move forward skillfully, with discernment and joy. -- Sharon Salzberg

I just downloaded Crucial Accountability today - it was actually originally called Crucial Confrontations.
