AR,

A recent discussion brought something to mind. Would it be possible to have a forum accessible only to member's who requested access to it? It could be a place for members struggling with letting go of an affair to talk about their feelings and issues unencumbered by members who can't handle hearing about how great the affair was, etc. etc. (people like me. so I would NEVER ask to join) and other members who can positively (and unemotionally) support them.

Just a thought.

Hi Pep,

I can understand where you are coming from. Sometimes we don't want to read certain viewpoints or information. Although I wouldn't characterize it as "here's how great the affair is" and would characterize it as "here are the things I got from the affair that made me feel good", I can understand why that content would be objectionable to some people. I also think that everyone has a right to choose what they do and do not read.

I'm not sure that another opt-in board is necessary, or even a good idea. It seems to me that it's a lot of administrative work for little gain...and sounds a bit like segregating certain opinions.

We do have other functions that can help. For instance, you can put a member on ignore. This means that you would not see the content of that member's post unless you deliberately chose to. Do you think that would help?

Oh it does help. I have quite an extensive list of ignores, and growing it as we speak.

It was a comment by a poster who said it was hard to speak openly about some aspects of the affair because of the response of some posters (he didn't SAY "like you" but I think he might have wanted to) that made me think of it.

You are right that I need to somehow change the way I view the forum. Right now I just use the active topics page and don't pay nearly enough attention to which part of the forum the post comes from. Even if I have a poster on ignore, it doesn't hide their post until I am actually in a forum. Obviously I need to change the way I enter the site, or more likely stop entering the site altogether!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. (And for all the other things you do here as well.)

Hi Pep,

I think knowing how you engage with MA - particularly in choosing what to read and what not to read - is a worthwhile endeavor. I encourage anyone to take a hard look at what they choose to consume and what they choose not to.

One of the positives of MA is the varying viewpoints among our membership, but those viewpoints will contain many triggers for our members. That also is a net positive, as it allows members to learn to deal with those triggers and to grow in their personal recovery paths. We do not grow without being challenged. Growth lies outside of our comfort zone.

That doesn't mean that we should dive into all of it at once, though. Choosing what to deal with, to what extent, etc is a personal choice that each member needs to make. Hopefully, those choices are made in such a way as to continue a growth path, but not be overwhelmed.

I'm glad to see that you are looking at this aspect.
