Lil - I'm less than 8 hours from Route 66 where it crosses through Flagstaff Arizona. If you're going to see the Grand Canyon - only an hour away from that point along Route 66 on the south rim, you might as well skip up into the northern side, and go see Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Grand Staircase, Capital Reef, and Arches/Canyonlands National Parks too, then join back up with Route 66 in Albuquerque.

I might have been not to far from you the last time I was over. We took a helicopter to the canyon. Flew past a glass walk thingy? Vegas end, sorry my geography is TERRIBLE!

I live close enough to Historic US 66 that I drive part of it almost wherever I go. The second generation 66 is 2 blocks from my house.

Acey is right that I no longer have my vacation property but I can still show folks some interesting parts of the old US 66 including stuff that is new but pays tribute to the old highway. Chicagoland Speedway and US 66 Dragstrip are next door to each other. Midewin Tall Grass Prairie and Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery are both on property once part of Joliet Army Ammunition Plant and the old Launching Pad drive in is now a museum.

There is also an old two cell jail that has been turned into a historic site and several places where the old pavement can still be seen, even driven on in a few spots. Considering that most of this comes from a 20 mile stretch. There are literally hundreds of places to stop and look at within 150 miles of Chicago.

Funk's Grove Maple Syrup still operates along the old highway. One of the first major truck stops is still going though not very busy or impressive these days in McLean County.

It's just under 300 miles t0 St Louis and some still operational tourist traps show up in Missouri including Merimac Caverns, said to be Jesse James hideout. Barn rooftop advertising for it can still be seen along the road.

If you make the trip, just let me know and we'll at least get together.

Flick has finally decided on what he wants to do for his 50th... a cruise around Asia

I am actually quite excited about this, but I am a little sad that we won't be able to do the long anticipated route 66 meet up.

Unless ya'll want to come on a cruise?

I guess it is his birthday, not mine, but I was looking forward to meeting everyone.

Other than that, life is good, marriage is good, things are going amazing

I'd bet that, if you could afford the car rental and gas, all of us would put you up in our homes and feed you and tourist you, so maybe you could afford a second vacation!

For sure, you’ve got us as a bed & breakfast in sunny Florida! I’d bet we’ve got members everywhere you’d want to go in the US. I did the Route 66 tour with General Motors when they introduced the 1998 Corvette convertible. It is a total gas of a trip. lol heck, I’d do it again just to see you.

Do it. Do it!

I figured it was time for one of my semi bi annual updates

First: Marriage is good.

Updates: The older daughter is pregnant again, to DK (groan) but I am actually happy about this one. I have also reached a point where I have accepted that DK is a part of her life, and after 3 children, he will most likely always be a part of her life.

Hopper is amazing. She has become quite the social butterfly, and very community involved. She was a princess in our local festival, had a role in the an-dram performance of Joseph, and sung in a local amateur sing off.

Beetle is great. Naughty like wee boys are, particularly with technology. So far I still have the upper hand....so far

The Flickster is working for the ambulance service in a paid role now, which is helping take the pressure off me to be the bread winner, and we are even discussing my going potentially part time in the future once Beetle starts at high school

I am very boring. I started at a clinic much closer to home 12 months ago, and that's been amazing. Mainly small animals so less cow time, but I do still have a couple floating around at home. My current fous is on doing a touch of renovation at home, along with the cruise in Feb. I worked out the other day, I put almost as much effort into researching cruise stuff as I used to affairs. I like the change of topic, but there is definitely not the wealth of information

Well I guess thats it. Life ticks along, has its minor dramas and remains rewarding

Lil xx

Thankies for the nice comments Blair and Orchid.

So I'm back, earlier than usual, its a REALLY slow day at work, and I am here on my ownsome. This leads to discretionary internet time wink

Chyrs, the cruise is Asia, touching in at Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Bali in Feb next year. I am super looking forward to it, and researching all I can, so I am not a total newbie lol

That cruise sounds fantastic, Lil. It also sounds like you’ve reached a similar place to me, where your life is pretty much “in order” and it’s hard to know exactly what to do with that. I hope you get lots of time to learn how that works!!
