Sci-fi geeks will recognize my name. She's a fictional character from the book "Dune" by Frank Herbert. One of the first things that my husband and I found in common when we first met was our shared love for this book.

Dune is one of my favorite Skiffy series of all time. I read Dune, in hardback, in 1968, as a freshman in High School. The paperback version hadn't been printed yet, IIRC.

I loved the 2 miniseries that were on the skiffy channel several years ago. I even know someone who worked on the special effects.

I've heard rumors that a remake of the movie - really a completely new effort, as the 1985 movie was rated as the worst movie of that year! - may be in the works. I hope so. I also hope that, if they do make a new movie, that they make the ornithopters ac2ally flap their wings. That's got 2 be the most annoying thing about the movie and miniseries.

Anyway, welcome Chani!

A fellow Dune fan. I'm so glad to make your acquaintance.
I could go on about this topic so you should not encourage me.

I was so excited when the 1985 film came out. The 1985 movie got the sandworms right. The stillsuits were cool. The costumes for the Bene Gessert Reverend Mothers were cool. However, I couldn't stand how they made the Baron this gross man, floating man with a digusting skin condition. He came off as crude rather than cunning.

The miniseries was better in some respects, but disappointing in other respects. I didn't care for the costumes at all. I would love to see a remake that's true to the books written by Frank Herbert. I refuse to read the "prequels" written by his son. I read a bit and I was dismayed at how they veered from the original series. I suppose I'm a purist.

I can't believe 2L is admitting he was a high school frosh in '68. razz

Glad you guys have a similar interest, Chani. I'd like to read more about it. Why don't you consider starting a blog about the concepts or a review about the book.

Also, I'd like to ask you a few things if you decide to start a thread somewhere. No hurry...you're welcome to post on this thread as long as you want.

By my calculations 2long is 59 or 60

except since he is a "rocket scientiest" maybe he was an over achiever so he may have graduated when he was 17 so he may be 58

I have a shining story to tell.....

was in the af and we had gotten up early dah that morning, so here we go to the movies to see The Shining.

I fell asleep in it, the friend that went with us was so pissed she kept waking me up at various parts of the movie, the wall of blood, the snow scene with the tractor thing, the little boy yelling redrum got me awake a bit esp in his creepy little voice, the typing sceen and I would nod off again.

To this day when I see that movie I am amazed I slept through it, gives me chills now to see it.

My screen name is one of many nick-names I've gotten in real life.

I won't post any of them here tho... It wouldn't take to much for a sharp individual to put 2+2 together and figure out my real first and last name.

Thanks for bumping this thread last month Lil.

I like hearing how people chose their screen names. It would be helpful if you state your preference for nicknames or initials on that thread, too.

Thanks,
Ace

My screen name means "Terrible Moma". frown

I was very distraught when I first came here so I chose a name reflective of how I viewed/view? myself. I'd like to change it if possible, both my view and my screen name.

We have several newbies who joined since this thread was last bumped. Others have changed names.

What does your current screen name mean and why did you choose it?

I changed mine from lildoggie to Lil. I felt I could give up the dog bit since it just reminded me that I was hiding from my DH when i chose it, and that I still dont like dogs smile

I never knew you didn't like dogs. My H once promised the kids we could get a dog when we had a fenced yard. We got the fenced yard and the kids asked for the dog...that's when I discovered his promise and I gave H an ultimatum:

Click to reveal..
"You have a choice, a wife or a dog."

I'm still here.

I've always been allergic to pets so I just developed an aversion to them.

Anyone else wanna post why you picked (or changed) your screen name?
