I found this while watching a You Tube video my cousin sent about pets reuniting with their owners. Out here on the Big Island pets are often lost or abandoned due to the flooding, volcano and even earthquake events. She sends links about this all the time. smile

I'm not a FB person but when watching what she sent me, I found this and wanted to share.......

Learning about life can come from so many places and things. Some of which is humorous and still a learning event. smile

Dog Snitching........

Enjoy!

Calling all teachers..........

Found this interesting video from my cousin: Bal-A-Vis-X

It's a short video about a teaching technique being taught to all school age students. Encourages focus, coordination and leaves less room for bad behavior.

Let me know what you think. smile

So I'm confused. I read this article: Some states are banning teachers from crowd funding for school supplies - WHY!???!?!

Do the schools want the teachers to fail their students? It is said the average teacher spends about $479.00 a year on school supplies. Who of us working folks can afford to spend that on our work supplies?

Article on 2019 Average Teacher's salary. NOTE: With COL (cost of living) increases, the pay brings home less than prior years (in some cases). Average teacher's salary comparison

From talking to teachers in different states, it seems like somebodies are out to make teacher's fail in their jobs. Can we identify who these persons/groups are and find out their motives? This is very sad. frown Very upsetting. angry Outright outrageous. very_angry

Input from teachers in our MA community is appreciated.

I can see both sides. I’ve been the teacher asking the parents to bring supplies and the exhausted parent running out late at night after first and second shift wondering why millennial children need brand new scissors and whatever else adds up to 479 every year. Of course my kids didn’t like my attitude those days. I think it could become another chore for already overworked teachers.

I vote for the folks who promise teacher raises but I get outvoted. My church meets at a local school and we spend a lot putting together gift bags of supplies for all the teachers so I try do do my part.

Hi NED,

Then my question is why are crowd funding for supplies a banned thing? Out here one HS principal makes about $160K a year. Now doesn't that sound like a bit much for a salary? I think teachers deserve more pay but some DOE's (dept of education) units pay some administrators too much and it's teaching staff too little. I see how hard these teachers work and we entrust our children's education to them for years. Sigh the obvious thing to do obviously is not getting done. frown

jmo,

So my cousin sent me the following message. I don't know how to copy and paste this message from her FB, so I'm retyping it.......

Has your dog gone missing? It's time to air your dirty laundry.

So this needs to be shared!
After 5 days I had given up hope of finding my dogs when a random stranger told me to air my dirty laundry so the dogs could catch the scent and find their way home.

Wednesday night I hung out a sheet and Thursday morning they were home.

Everyone needs to know this trick.

Please share!

What a novel way to help your pet come home. smile

FYI: Interesting report from USGS about earthquakes and volcanos.

Volcanic Activity Summary: Ash eruption at Shishaldin continues and has intensified as shown in satellite and lightning data. Satellite data suggest the ash cloud is as high as 27,000 ft asl and drifting east-northeast. Aviation Color Code is RED and Alert Level is WARNING.

The National Weather Service has issued a SIGMET for this activity (https://www.weather.gov/aawu/).

Earthquakes: USGS.gov 3 earthquakes in a similar latitude

Sinabank Indonesia 6.2 - Loc: 2.333n / 96.347 E
Kimbe, Papua New Guinea 6.0 - Loc: 5.155S / 151.258E
Indios, Puerto rico 6.4 - Loc: 17.916N / 66.813W

Puerto Earthquake update

In case you know of anyone in those areas. We have one MAer near one of those areas and she said she and her family were ok. Whew........

So in addition to the other types of disturbing news rumbling in other areas of this planet for other reasons, these unpreventable eruptions are definitely concerning.

Just to share, had a bit of a meltdown today. A family friend is dying. He and his wife are good friends of my mother and while I didn't realize it at the time, his current suffering is triggering what I saw my mom experience. I didn't think it would still hit me this hard but it nearly knocked the wind out of me today.

His son who is like a younger brother to me is going through this all alone. He is their only son/child. The dad was such a strong and vibrant man, it is truly sad to see how the ravages of illness can wear one down.

I have been trying to provide support to my friend for his family. Not as easy as some may think.

Safe to say, it is important for those we love that we tell them. Even if they can't respond. They may be able to hear us, through their suffering and pain. Each situation is different but the need to care can be given as needed.

Take care,
Orchid

SW, Blair & all,

Thank you for your care and concern. My friend's dad passed away on Sunday, 3/1/20 around 3am. He saw his friends and family during the last few days of his life. He is missed by many. He was almost 79 years old. He is a highly respected man that my family had the privilege of knowing.

As I grow older, I see the truth of this passage: A good name is better than good oil, and the day of death is better than the day of birth.

Now the problem my friend is facing, he is not sure if a funeral can be planned because large gatherings of any sort are being halted for the time being in his area. This is indeed quite sad.

The issues facing all of us remind us of the need for accurate and factual information. Mis-information for whatever reason is not helpful, nor is it funny. Please make sure yourself, family and all around you are getting accurate up-to-date information about this particular virus and other important matters. Put aside all influences designed to divide and cause harm.

Life that hangs in the balance is not to be trifled with, each life is precious. The need to show genuine empathy, sympathy and care both in thought and deed is important. Prayers are important and so are good deeds.

Take care,
Orchid

How is everyone doing? With the COVID19 virus showing up in so many countries and seeing how quickly it can spread plus not having enough testing supplies and with a viable vaccination still a ways off, it is important we educate each with correct information. Some of it will come from the health and science communities. Others will come from all levels of the government and still others will come from new reports and expert interviews along with some personal experiences.

It may seem overwhelming to deal with what seems like information overload, so pace yourself but don't go into panic or denial. The virus knows no boundaries. It doesn't care what your race, gender, religion, age, political persuasion, where you live, your income or lack thereof, whether you have health insurance or not, whether you work or not. So don't make your decisions based on anything that will prejudice you from the truth.

I don't do FB but a friend from the mainland send me a FB post and I found this personal reporting quite concerning. Again, not to panic but inform.

Sharing a FB post from friend about an experience from Italy on the COVID 19 virus.

March 10 at 12:42 PM
From: C. H.
I am writing to you from Bergamo, Italy, at the heart of the coronavirus crisis. The news media in the US has not captured the severity of what is happening here. I am writing this post because each of you, today, not the government, not the school district, not the mayor, each individual citizen has the chance, today to take actions that will deter the Italian situation from becoming your own country’s reality. The only way to stop this virus is to limit contagion. And the only way to limit contagion is for millions of people to change their behavior today.

If you are in Europe or the US you are weeks away from where we are today in Italy.

I can hear you now. “It’s just a flu. It only affects old people with preconditions”

There are 2 reasons why Coronavirus has brought Italy to it’s knees. First it is a flu is devastating when people get really sick they need weeks of ICU – and, second, because of how fast and effectively it spreads. There is 2 week incubation period and many who have it never show symptoms.

When Prime Minister Conte announced last night that the entire country, 60 million people, would go on lock down, the line that struck me most was “there is no more time.” Because to be clear, this national lock down, is a hail mary. What he means is that if the numbers of contagion do not start to go down, the system, Italy, will collapse.

Why? Today the ICUs in Lombardy are at capacity – more than capacity. They have begun to put ICU units in the hallways. If the numbers do not go down, the growth rate of contagion tells us that there will be thousands of people who in a matter of a week? two weeks? who will need care. What will happen when there are 100, or a 1000 people who need the hospital and only a few ICU places left?

On Monday a doctor wrote in the paper that they have begun to have to decide who lives and who dies when the patients show up in the emergency room, like what is done in war. This will only get worse.

There are a finite number of drs, nurses, medical staff and they are getting the virus. They have also been working non-stop, non-stop for days and days. What happens when the drs, nurses and medical staff are simply not able to care for the patients, when they are not there?

And finally for those who say that this is just something that happens to old people, starting yesterday the hospitals are reporting that younger and younger patients – 40, 45, 18, are coming in for treatment.

You have a chance to make a difference and stop the spread in your country. Push for the entire office to work at home today, cancel birthday parties, and other gatherings, stay home as much as you can. If you have a fever, any fever, stay home. Push for school closures, now. Anything you can do to stop the spread, because it is spreading in your communities – there is a two week incubation period – and if you do these things now you can buy your medical system time.

And for those who say it is not possible to close the schools, and do all these other things, locking down Italy was beyond anyone’s imagination a week ago.

Soon you will not have a choice, so do what you can now.

Please share.

Take care,
Orchid

As of 3/14/20, here is an article that gives some status on cleaning supplies and TP (aka: toilet paper).

I've said for many years that the MOST important paper in our homes is: Toilet Paper. We start prioritizing things differently during stressful times.

From IN THE KNOW - Cleaning supply and TP status as of 3/14/20

Check with your local stores as to when the next delivery of goods will be. That can help. No guarantees but it helps to know when to check back. Of course encourage all to make sensible purchase and not hoard. Costco in our area received a shipment of toilet paper but even limiting 1 package per purchaser wiped out the stock supply quickly.

Know that fear can create chaos and that becomes a whole 'nuther problem on it's own. If we each work to not let fear rule our lives, it will help us work through these stressful times. Then our prayers, care and concern can have a better impact on those around us.

Take care,
LeAnne

My roommate is from South America and says we are panicking because this is new to us, just like the first time you experience a bad earthquake or hurricane. We stocked up with a few weeks of food and are keeping the place clean, staying out of crowds, mostly staying home as much as possible, washing hands a lot, and not touching our faces. This too shall pass. Thankfully I can work from home and YD can do school remote.

Experts say that often a safe amount to stock is for about 2 months. No hoarding and do no panic.

Americans in the US tend to panic and other countries who have been through worse, step back and watch. We should take a lesson from those who have worked through these disasters.

The worse thing anyone can do is be ignorant. Like the basketball player who sarcastically touched the tip of each microphone and later was diagnosed with COVid19. Or the politician who is now telling folks to basically ' eat, drink and be merry' instead of being cautious.

I am not telling folks not to go out but know your situation. If you have health weaknesses (prone to upper respiratory infections, compromised immune systems), then you may want to be more cautious when you go out and who you allow to be around you.

This particular virus can cause one to have difficulty breathing. The Covid-19 is showing signs of being more infectious than the common flue, so it can spread farther and faster. Tests are showing that the virus may live long on certain types of items like glass (i.e. cell phones and other devices, so keep current on those updates.

Brief recap of current known symptoms of the Covid-19 virus:
Some symptoms of flu and Covid-19 are similar: a dry cough and fever. Covid-19 more often causes shortness of breath and difficulty breathing -- a sign to seek immediate medical attention. Influenza causes aches, fatigue, headache and chills; these appear to be less common with Covid-19. Flu symptoms tend to come on abruptly, getting worse in a day or two. With Covid-19, symptoms may be more gradual and take several days to get worse. If you are sneezing, or have a stuffy or runny nose, the good news is that you probably just have a garden-variety common cold -- ironically, one possibly caused by a different coronavirus.

Former CDC director: Covid019 is different from the flu and we must respond differently

So we should learn how to stay properly informed vs listening to bad advice and don't panic. smile

For employers and small business owners:

SBA: Business and Employer COVID-19 Plan and Respond link.

Per the SBA (Small Business Administration: Health and government officials are working together to maintain the safety, security, and health of the American people. Small businesses are encouraged to do their part to keep their employees, customers, and themselves healthy.

As of today 3/15/20, the CDC has issued a recommendation of limiting gatherings to no more than 50 persons. What this means to us individually may need to be assessed. For those who are in school, work, etc, please check in to find out how this may impact your work / school week.

This is being sent for informational use only. Please don't panic. Check with the news in your local areas, government and other authorities. The more we know, the better informed we can be. Remember, the case count is obtained based on the amount of testing done. It doesn't mean it isn't in your individual areas if there hasn't been sufficient testing. Proactive safety precautions can help keep the virus count down once the testing gets started in your individual areas.

Take care,
Orchid
