So we've got this active volcano reeking havoc on one of our islands and what else????

Olivine, raining olivine!!!! Check this out......

Hawaii's Volcano Is Literally Erupting Gems

Partial excerpt: ......The green gems are olivine crystals, a common mineral found in Hawaii's lava. At jewelry quality, the mineral is called peridot.

In fact, olivine is one of the most common minerals below Earth's surface but it is quite hard to find it separated from the parent rock and even harder to find it of gem quality.

Olivine is so common that experts estimate over 50 percent of Earth's upper mantle is composed of olivine or variations of the mineral. While it is a common mineral, little crystals of olivine falling out of the sky are quite unusual.

Typically, olivine erupts with the calm oozing of basalt lava on Hawaii, locking it away within the rock fabric. However, in this instance the sudden ejection of lava into the air rapidly cools and separates the melt, allowing the olivine to lithify as a separate crystal.

Enjoy!!! smile

I used to have an olivine and pink coral necklace but can't find a picture of it. The necklaces can be found in department and jewelry stores all over the island but I like to find those who make it and purchase directly from them. the designs are intriguing.

To be able to see these stones practically in the making is quite awesome. Our earth is a beautiful planet that is still teaching us so much. There is still a lot to learn about our home. smile

This was a quiet year, no major fireworks could be seen or heard from my house but then again, we got this.......

So here's an update: 7/4/18 video of the Kapoho Crater flow. Shows how close the lava is flowing from the crater to the ocean.

7/4/18 Overflows near Kapoho Crater (Big Island)

So far I have 1 customer where his land is safe but locked in by the flow so he can't access it. He doesn't live there but it is still his property. His friend lost 2 homes and there are others. I have a couple of cousins, some more distant relatives and friends plus my father's OW and family that I know of. None of them are in jeopardy but suffer from the effects of the vog and the communities are pulling together to help the displaced families.

This is natural disaster is having a huge impact on the island but the communities are working together. Disasters are human created, it is abhorrent because there is no need for that to be added to the suffering of people. Just making an observation.

Thought you might like to know what is happening out in the middle of the big blue. smile

Well now we've got a hurricane on the south east horizon. Keeping watch over a growing hurricane: Hurricane Hector.

It's a ways away (about 1900 miles) but it's already at 110 mph headed up towards the Big Island.

Last Updated: 8/2/2018, 5:00:00 PM (Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time)

Location: 14.1 N 126.9 W Movement: W at 11 mph Wind: 110 mph Pressure: 28.74 in

Between the volcano and possible hurricane, our folks on the Big Island are bracing up for rain with the volcano. How that will mix out is yet to be seen. eek

Well.....another hurricane will hopefully travel below the BI and follow the path of Hector or near it.

Link: Hurricane Lane

Seems this year the Pacific is more active for hurricanes.

Weather report says we may get some wind and rain. Hopefully not more than that. The weather has been humid and we had one downpour this evening.

Still need to stay prepared......better safe than sorry.

FYI: 8.2 earthquake in Fiji with aftershocks ranging from 4.4 to 6.8.

Ok, well I got notice one of my hanai aunti's is very ill. Doctors don't give her much more time and I want to fly out to see her.

Problem 1: Reservations and $ to fly......I can do this, my son will help out.
Problem 2: I hate to fly.......I can do this, just have to focus on the reason.
Problem 3: Hurricane Lane's path now shows it coming closer to us at speeds estimated between a tropical storm (39 - 73 mph) and a Hurricane 1 (74 - 95 mph).

Any winds in that range can cause lots of damage. We are prepared......just gotta get my water bob ready to setup. - I can't control this problem, just adjust to it's potential impact. This hasn't really hit the news yet. Hurricane Lane 8/20/18 link

Hurricane Lane is currently out on open water spinning at about 125 mph - traveling about 12 mph in a westerly direction.

Japan and South Korea along with Okinawa are bracing for 2 hurricanes (one right behind the other) as well. Typhoon Soulik currently at 115 mph headed NWN & Typhoon Cimaron headed NW at 75 mph.

Plus the earthquake in Fiji 8.2 on Saturday and many large aftershocks. Along with the Indonesian earthquakes.

Lots going on above and under us out here.

Blair,

I'm willing to go. Have to make sure my work is caught up. Biggest hurdle right now is that Hurricane. Scheduled to come the closest to us Friday - Sunday. That may impact my ability to fly out and return. On flip side, my aunt's health is slipping and we don't know how much longer she has. Very frustrating.

I'm going to carefully weigh all the factors and give it prayerful consideration as well.

Thanks for your response.

Update: Hurricane Lane is currently out on open water spinning at about 155 mph - traveling about 8 mph in a westerly direction. So it now stands as a category 4 and if it goes any faster it will be a category 5.

We are a bit up (north of it) and it is expected to turn north soon. The Big Island may impact first and then the smaller islands up the chain. How much wind and rain is unknown. We are projected to be in the cone of impact but not the eye.

If the outer bands pass over the volcano and Mauna Kea (where the observatory sits), it may slow it down and hopefully break it down. Still there may be some damage to the Big Island, so right now we have to all get prepared.

Need to get my water bob ready to fill. I have spam and canned corn beef. That's what my parents and many residents here lived on during WWII. The things you can do with spam, really. Got beer, juice and water. A bit of wine and whiskey to cover all the bases and a hand can opener. Also 2 Costco size packs of the most important paper - toilet paper and garbage bags. LOL!!!

We are ok for now. Thanks to all for asking. I live on Oahu which is 2nd from the top and the hurricane is coming from the south.

My cousin lives on the BI and heavy rains but not so much winds on her side of the island. More like about 14 - 17" in about 12 - 15 hours. That's a lot . Winds are whipping up the surf on the south side of the island.

Beaches are closed on all islands along with schools, banks, gas stations, restaurants, etc. Some places are open but most have closed and will stay closed through Friday. We got our house boarded up. Long story but WS offered and after weighing our options, I decided it was ok to allow him to help us board up our house. I sent him the window dimensions and he got the wood. Both he and our son worked together and they got it done in about 3 hours. My son spent most of the day shoring up the inside of the house while I had to board up a client's office and help a friend who can't drive.

I paid for the materials a some of his time. It's fair, I'm ok with that. Gave him a water bob and light as well as dinner. Made up for his labor. He said I didn't have to pay but, I don't want that held against me later like before. Just glad it's done.

Exhausted and have 1 more payroll to complete for this week.

A good place to observe our condition is the Weather Channel (if you have cable). It is a good channel to watch for weather events in many areas.

That's all I know for now. Doing laundry and getting our water storage ready. Shopping is done for the next 2 weeks and if we have to live without electricity, we'll be ok.

Got the most important paper on hand (toilet paper). smile

I haven't heard from SNC yet. Hope he and his family are ok.

Take care,
Orchid

Thanks Orchid for the update. I saw that about the flooding and hope it will weaken before you get it. Are you on high ground?

Aloha Ned,

We live in the middle of Oahu (considered Central Oahu) and on higher ground. Bit of wind and rain but not too much......yet. All boarded up and ready to.....float. Just kidding about the floating part. smile

If the hurricane comes closer maybe we can have fish from......da' sky? YIKES....that would be weird better get the hibachi ready. Wait, I don't have a hibachi.....ok, sashimi then....hope it's ahi (tuna) and not shark. LOL!!!

Got that James Taylor, 'fire and rain' song in my head......crazy what living inside a boarded house can do. wink

For now we have power, water, internet, cell and....spam....beer, water, wine, crackers, tuna, nori, assorted dry goods foods and still need to cook what's in the freezer. Camping at home, what a concept.....that's a real staycation. smile

I'm keeping the weather channel on, it's a change from the daily news which is drama of it's own in some places, real stories in others. Updating friends and checking on some family. 2 mainland BILs have been checking on me (very nice of them). The other relatives don't seem to care......no change from the past so not to hurt by that, just aware. They have shown their true selves and think other's don't know.....but we do. Well, life goes on.

My cousin, a client and one aunti on the BI are keeping me updated. They are suffering the worst. First volcano, earthquakes now floods and wind damages in some places.

So just working and getting stuff ready. My water bob did good and our tub has over 50 gallons of drinking and cooking water. Back up toilet water is ready in both bathrooms. Lots of toilet paper and paper towels. Getting laundry done as needed.

Got our fans running to circulate the air in the house and bring in good outside air.

Just have work to do from home so I'm keeping busy.....gotta go make my smoothies for breakfast. wink

Thanks for checking in on me. I know you all have a lot of safety tips for me to use and share. I appreciate them.

Take care,
Orchid

Update: The attached article from usgs.gov shows a place called Rainbow Falls on the Big Island, near my parent's old house.

Rainbow Falls, then and now

Our island isn't flooding yet and the strange thing is that Hilo is on the side farthest away from the hurricane and the one that got hammered by rain.

It is now down to a cat 1 (85mph and still out on the open ocean). The mph is still high if that impacts land. So we stay on the alert.

Take care,
Orchid
