Hi everyone. I'm back with more inquisitiveness about how our members navigate around our site.

The point to these questions is that I know how *I* browse the site, but I want to know what our members find valuable...and the relative value of each.

These polls will be open until the end of November. Each member can vote only once, but you can't see the results without voting...which, in case you haven't caught on, is my way of encouraging you to vote. grin

How often do you come to the main forum listing page (list of all forums) on each visit?

In all cases where I used "almost never" the answer is actually "never" and for the first poll I answered "on every visit" but the actual answer is constantly. I return to that screen at the end of reading each thread.

AR, I don't specifically come to the site and look for new content on the sidebars, but I do see it, and click on the stuff when it looks interesting.

Me too.

I may seldom use some of the features to find my way to posts I haven't read, but it does alert me to interesting threads to look for via my preferred means of navigating. I wouldn't want to see the other features go away. JMHO. I don't have any experience or training in design, so take it with a grain of NaCl.

I don't know about anything going away. As I'm reading, I'm having other ideas about best approaches to reaching membership with critical announcements and such.

Each question has to be evaluated in context. After all, it's not like we have new members showing up often enough for a very active member to use the "Newest Members" box on every visit, is it?

AR, how the yellow New Posts envelopes work is a factor, too. If you click on a post from active topics, then you no longer have a yellow envelope for any thread in that forum, which means if there is something new, you have to scroll and find where the new stuff starts, instead of being taken there automatically.

I would use the Forum list over Active Topics if there were less forums, but with the number we have, it's easier to use Active Topics for me.

Yes, I use the yellow envelopes and red numbers system.

Great feedback.

I was actually thinking of changing the templates so that the community announcement showed up on the "Active Topics" pages.

Do you think there's a way to have less forums...such as consolidating similar ones? (Keep in mind that any change like that would require full BoD approval...I'm just wondering.)

I think this is a great idea. I personally have missed (or not noticed at first) announcements because I go straight to "Active Topics". I don't pass go, I go straight to Active Topics using my history as I type in the URL, or the pictures of recently visited sites. I know others have also missed such announcements, and sometimes even gotten into trouble because of it.

Having the announcement show up as an active topic would be so much more foolproof and would avoid such misunderstandings.

I would be all for consolidating similar ones. But there was just a small portion of us who use active topics, so I understand leaving it how it is so it is better for the majority.

The simplest construct I could think of, especially with the holidays coming, when it would be great to subtly encourage folks to turn away from the computer wink This may be the only website I can think of whose mission is better served the less time we spend online!

What I was putting on my to-do list (and we all know how long those often take to become reality) is pretty much what Jayne has outlined and for the reason she gives.

Kitty also made a similar comment once, as she had missed the sad tribute to OurHouse.

Now, each member has the responsibility to keep him/herself updated on policy announcements and other news. We have standard ways of communicating such information that are well-known to our members by now.

However, if I could make it just a little easier - adapt to the way a portion of our members use our site - and put the Community Notice at the top of the Active Topics and Active Posts, I think it would be just a bit better.

I agree and it would help me immensely as I almost never check the forum page - only active topics.

PS: What I find so interesting about these polls is how few people respond.
